FUTURE YOU
Stuart McGrath
Overview
As part of the Future You initiative by UNSW, I was commissioned by Trapdoor Productions to capture the story of Stuart McGrath — the first Aboriginal nurse from his community in remote Arnhem Land, Northern Territory.
Future You is a series created to inspire young Australians, particularly those aged 8–12, by sharing the journeys of people thriving in underrepresented career paths. Stuart’s story was not only powerful but deeply personal, offering young viewers a window into healthcare, cultural identity, and perseverance.
I travelled to Stuart’s community, capturing his life both inside the local clinic and out in the red dust landscapes of Arnhem Land. The project involved conducting interviews, capturing vérité footage, managing location sound, aerial shots (postcard locations and the most amazing sunsets by the way!) and completing all aspects of post-production — from story edit to audio mix and colour grade.
Despite the logistical challenges of working in such a remote setting, the result is a thoughtful, engaging film that celebrates Stuart’s journey and introduces young viewers to the vital role of nursing in community healthcare.
